The cover artwork is a side profile of Bowie, in character as Thomas Jerome Newton from The Man Who Fell to Earth, wearing a duffel coat against an orange backdrop. Buckley writes that it was meant to be a visual pun meaning ‘low profile’; many people did not understand the joke until Bowie pointed it out in a later interview. Visconti contended that the title was partly a reference to Bowie’s “low” moods during the album’s writing and recording [Wiki].
